Teachers demonstrate mastery of and pedagogical expertise in the content they teach.
Teachers provide instruction that is aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards and their district's organized plan of instruction.
Greeley Central High Schools' focus for the year is based on Reading and Writing Comprehension so they wanted teachers to create assignments that have the students "Engaging in Rigorous Text Observations + Evidence of Student Thinking". This assignment had the students annotating an article "Ballet: A Cursed And Complicated Beauty" as an individual, in groups, and to the class. They all were instructed to annotate the article in the way that best fits their learning style with comprehensive reading. The Assistant Principal on the day of this assignment, used the last page of this pdf title "Modeling Text Annotation" to observe how me as the teacher helped the students achieve not only an understanding of the reading, but how to dive into the readings meaning and utilize multiple perspectives in the classroom to better their understanding of the text.
Teachers develop and implement lessons that connect to a variety of content areas/disciplines and emphasize literacy and mathematics.
When diving into where and how dance truly originated in The Arts & Culture Class I guest taught at Greeley before being assigned there for my student teaching, I utilized the Vernacular Jazz Dance Tree as an annotation worksheet during the Vernacular Jazz unit. This unit encompassed not only the origin of the movement of dance but how music, singing, instrumentation, and theatre played a huge part in the way dance was created and developed from Non-Western to Western art forms. I had the students use the tree to highlight, underline, and take notes of similarities between the art forms which focused on their literacy skills, but it also showcased content from multiple artistic disciplines. This supported all the students in the Arts & Culture class as they all come from a multitude of backgrounds including instrumental music, orchestra, vocal music, dance, visual art, and theatre.
Teachers demonstrate knowledge of the content, central concepts, inquiry, appropriate evidence-based instructional practices, and specialized characteristics of the disciplines being taught.
In both my Dance 1 Regular class and Dance 1 Arts Magnet Program class, I had a mini Fosse unit. In this unit, I broke down dancer, choreographer, and director, Bob Fosse's life with how he became the symbol of jazz that we see today. Since Fosse is someone that is an artistic inspiration of mine, I was able to provide content from multiple outlets that gave the students a well-rounded unit. In this unit, I used this presentation that includes information, videos from past into the present, and my own choreography to give them a through-line to Fosse's impact along with who inspired him to truly showcase the origins of jazz while still highlighting Fosse. At the end of the presentation, they analyzed choreography I made and we discussed how his technique is showcased in modern-day choreography. This unit allowed me to demonstrate my knowledge that covered all aspects of the concepts which provided them with information they can truly learn and use throughout the semester.
Throughout these lessons and many others, I believe I have executed Standard 1 to its highest level as I have showcased my pedagogical expertise through multiple lenses. From clear instruction, to interdisciplinary units, into demonstrating thorough concepts and designed content connections, In each lesson, I create content that provides my students with layers of material that build upon each other for understanding and execution of ones learning in all forms from reading, annotating, analyzing dance, and embodying the dance forms as well. This not only showed me how my complete understanding of the topic is imperative for my students to truly learned, but it allowed them to layer their learning and really absorb the information. As I continue to develop my teaching methodology, my goal is to continue to create layered lessons that demonstrate content through multiple lenses so that my students can effectively increase their knowledge and gain understanding that they can implement into their lives.
