EDUC 450/486

Introduction

My EDUC 450 experience has been very influential to my teaching and challenged me to find new ways to discover dance education through other outlets. Due to my practicum placement not being a dance class, I worked with my Dance Methods teacher to find opportunities in other environments that would give me the same experience and show me an example of a dance program and dance leader in a school. Working at Greeley Central High School with Dance instructor Christy O'Connell Black, I was given the opportunity to teach multiple classes both dance technique focused and art lecture based that pushed me to design lessons and create strategies for the students to learn in new and effective ways. The reason I teach and am studying this new degree is shown clearly through concept that schools in the area don't have dance as an option in comparison to other art forms. Dance is creative, structured, challenging, and creates not only artists but thinkers, collaborators, and leaders that will bring new meaning to the importance of dance education in schools. The students I taught were bright and had a true want to learn and as teachers and artists, we need to push them to feed their hunger for wanting to create art that will influence them and others through time.

This artifact showcases a lesson that gives all students an opportunity to learn the same content but in different ways. Using the content of choreographic analysis through the CSI strategy, all students can use their learning strengths whether it's visual, audible, or through writing as a way to understand the same topic.

Conclusion

Through  EDUC 450 and my experience working within K-12 schools, studios, and the community; I have developed a wide range of knowledge and teaching strategies that allow me to be a leader for the dancers and artists in the upcoming generation. This class challenged me to think outside of the box and find new ways to teach the content of dance to all levels of dancers and non-dancers and well as showing to peers and instructors how dance education is of high demand and importance to growing creators, thinkers, and artists from within schools.
